The Development Of Civilization Essay Research Paper free essay sample

The Development Of Civilization Essay, Research Paper The Development of Civilization in the Ancient World In order to understand the development of civilisation in worlds, a long and about as diverse procedure, complete with ruins and dead-ends, as the physical development of world itself, we must foremost understand the conditions of life in that clip period. Other factors we have to account for are the different physical capablenesss and restrictions of adult male and the climactic conditions of the ancient universe. The development has gone from simple groups of huntsmans to great imperiums to progress signifiers of authorities such as democracy and communism. However, the chief construct that has driven work forces to larn to work together is survival. Man, due to physical restrictions, is unable to last on his ain. Work force must interact with each other in order to last. This common yarn in the development of civilisation has enabled adult male to develop to the degree he has, from a clip when cave drawings were considered historical records and had spiritual significance to an age when we have readily available at our fingertips the temperature of a metropolis two thousand stat mis off. We will write a custom essay sample on The Development Of Civilization Essay Research Paper or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In this essay, I am traveling to analyze how mankind went from sets of huntsmans to the great metropoliss that sprung all over Asia, the Middle East and southeasterly Europe in ancient times. In analyzing this development, I will explicate how adult male has become the in one sense the high terminal in development, in his ability to pull strings nature, and the low point in development, in his ability and evident willingness to destruct himself. Besides, any mention to the word adult male is implied in the general sense of the full human race, male and female alike. To get down this essay, I am traveling to discourse the demand of adult male for other work forces. Whether the dependance that work forces have on each other is a positive or negative facet of world is unfastened for argument. However there is about no 1 in this twenty-four hours and age, at least in western civilisation, who is wholly independent of others to last. Not one of us is able to emotionally last ( wholly disregarding the physical facets of endurance ) solitariness. This finally leads to madness and suicide. However, the primary necessity that led to the development of civilisation was non the mental factor, it was the physical factor. Work force learned that in order to last they were traveling to hold to work together. Work force learned that better cloaks could be made if one adult male made them all and that more and better nutrient could be caught or gathered and eaten if one adult male or a group of work forces caught or collected all of it. All of these realisations led to the development of the earliest communities of people. Work force learned to work together in order to work more expeditiously and to do life easier. Mankind could neer hold developed into what it is today if it wasn? T for its ability to work together, for this ability was the ultimate separation point between us and animate beings. By working together, adult male was able to better on his efficiency in nutrient production. Man switched from merely garnering nutrient and merely chancing that the following topographic point he went would hold the nutrient he needed to last. Now adult male began to see that the nutrient would ever be at that place when he needed it by get downing to farm and domesticate animate beings. These farming techniques and the division of labour brought world to a turning point in his development. Animals, unlike worlds spend every waking hr of their lives seeking to last and work forces did that until it was no longer necessary because they had adequate nutrient, if non more than plenty to last and so adult male was really able to sit down and believe about things, to see, interpret and explore. One of the greatest evolutionary achievements came from these achievements: spoken communicating. Spoken communicating, every bit advanced as ours, is one of the things that separate us from animate beings, because ideas are worthless if there is no manner to portion them. It is unbelievable how much as evolved from the simple demand to last. The physical development of adult male, nevertheless great it is, has been good surpassed by the societal development of adult male. It is simple to wonder at the past, but we can neer truly understand our current civilisation without understanding its roots. Even at this early degree of civilisation, art, one of the most fantastic and alone things about the human race, developed. It is believed that art started out as symbolic word picture? s of human relationships. This theory suggests that early societal philosophers tried to construe the demands of the societal construction by picturing them symbolically. For illustration, cave bison were non meant to be seen as bison, but instead depicted as adult females, and Equus caballuss were meant to be seen as work forces. Some celebrated cave drawings can be seen in southern France/northern Spain. On these cave walls are depicted fantastic wall paintings of animate beings, such as bison, bulls, Equus caballuss, ponies and harts. Besides, the cave painters were non of the huntsmans in their group, their functions in society was to pull these pictures. They were specializers at their art. These people spent their whole twenty-four hours, merely like the hunter-gatherers spent their whole twenty-four hours, making their occupation. This is grounds that division of labour is a really old construct. Cave drawings were evidently a really of import portion of a society in ancient yearss, and art itself came to be a really of import portion of every civilization that has of all time existed. Later civilisations formed more advanced versions of art, such as sculpture, music and literature. These are all defined as humanistic disciplines. Almost every civilization that had the ability to developed these signifiers of art, did. After the societal group of hunter-gatherers, another type of community evolved. This was the community of villagers. Villages would non hold been possible if it wasn? T for the development of hand-tools, specifically the hand-ax. Hand tools made it possible for adult male to construct some of the constructions he built when he built the small towns. ? Nineteenth-century bookmans hypothesized four phases in human development: ( 1 ) a barbarian phase in which all people were hunter-gatherers, ( 2 ) a herder or nomad phase during which adult male domesticated some animate beings, ( 3 ) a agrarian phase, and ( 4 ) civilisation. Research workers have since attempted to find when and where adult male foremost changed from hunter-gatherer to pastoralist or agriculturist. ? Many governments have come to believe that adult male # 8217 ; s domestication of workss and animate beings caused alterations in their formand that the presence or absence of such alterations may bespeak whether the animate being or works was domesticated at some clip in the yesteryear. On the footing of such grounds, some bookmans have hypot hesized a preliminary agricultural stage of intensive nutrient assemblage in the Middle East about 9000-7000 BC, when adult male passed from runing and garnering to nutrient bring forthing or agribusiness. The Natufians of Palestine, who possessed reaping hooks, lived at this clip ; whether the grain they harvested was sown or wild is non known. Cattles were likely domesticated during this period or somewhat earlier from the wild ox ( Bos Sanchez ) , which stood six to seven pess ( 1.8 to 2.1 meters ) high at the withers ( the ridge between the shoulder castanetss ) . At Shanidar, in Iraq, it is claimed that sheep, similar to wild assortments in signifier and construction, were kept in herds. Furthermore, it has been suggested on slightly bad evidences that einkorn wheat ( Triticummonococcum ) , emmer wheat ( Triticum turgidum ) , and wild barley ( Hordeum spontaneum ) were cultivated about 7000 BC at Ali Kosh on the boundary lines of Iraq and Iran. ? There seems no obliging ground, nevertheless, why these cases should be regarded as the first of their sort. It is possible that domesticated beans ( Phaseolus ) , peas ( Pisum ) , bottle calabashs ( Lagenaria siceraria ) , and H2O chestnuts ( Trapa ) may hold been grown at the Spirit Cave in northern Thailand about 9000 BC. In the Americas, Cucurbita pepos ( Cucurbita ) and calabashs ( Lagenaria ) are known to hold existed in domesticated signifier in northeast Mexico about 7000 BC, and likely beans in the Tehuacan Valley. The castanetss of a Canis familiaris, perchance used for runing about 8500 B.C. ; were discovered in the United States. In amount, it now seems improbable that there was either a individual or even a really limited figure of topographic points of beginning of works and carnal domestication and, hence, of agribusiness. ? Villagers were able to remain in one topographic point because of the newfound abilities in agriculture and farm animal. This brought approximately even greater achievements because of its complexness. Work force had to wholly alter their manner of life to last village life. Most of their clip was spent in field-work. Most people worked in nutrient production, with a really little per centum, possibly every bit small as one per centum were involved in handcrafts such as doing clayware, weaving, and tool/weapon doing. When people in western Asia became agriculturalists, they began constructing year-round home topographic points. With the development of lasting small towns came the development of warfare. Warfare has become an mundane portion of people? s lives. Peoples? s attitudes reflect this war-like behaviour. How people build up confederations in mundane life. How one group of kids can non wish another group, and vice-versa. The spirit of war is imbedded in us all. It may non come of course, but we see it in ourselves and each other. ? Village organisation necessarily brought about long- distance trade, and it merely as necessarily provoked the growing of war. No uncertainty war has been the curse of human being, with dearth and disease, at least since the visual aspect of agricultural small towns, but since the growing of warfare in ancient times stimulated the growing of economic and societal complexness it however must be counted as a measure toward the outgrowth of civilisation. ? The promotions that can be contributed to warfare in ancient times can besides be attributed to modern times. For illustration, the United States and many other states across the universe were brought out of the Great Depression by World War II. In add-on to economic promotions due to the war, societal promotions were besides made. Civil rights and adult females? s rights motions gained great strength during this clip, and the same can be expected to hold happened in ancient times, because, as we already know, history repetitions itself. ? What makes the hand-ax of peculiar involvement here is that by the clip of its flawlessness during the 2nd inter-glacial, it was being manufactured over a genuinely huge country: from South Africa to southern England and from England across the southern half of Europe and the Near East to India. ? Villages, nevertheless, were merely a minor beginning to what was to come. The following degree in the development of civilisation was the outgrowth of the towns. Towns were somewhat more populated than small towns and much more organized. Town had leaders or male monarchs and these towns finally evolved into metropoliss. Many towns sprung up about southwest Asia and Europe around this clip. Religion played an of import function in the lives of towns people. ? From the 3rd millenary BC to the beginning of the Christian Era, signifiers of supplication changed little among the Assyrians and Babylonians and their posterities. The oldest signifiers are composed of anthem and litanies to the Moon goddess Sin and the God Tammuz. Though some vocals of joy have been found, most are adjurations. Some anthem of thanksgiving Tell of gratitude to the deity for triumph over an enemy. ? Many civilisation? s developed faiths to explicate natural phenomenon. They believed that if they made forfeits to their Gods, they would have a good crop, good conditions and be free from diseases. Religion played an of import function in the development of ancient civilisations. Many of these freshly formed metropoliss were ruled under a theocracy, a signifier of authorities in which the swayer has both spiritual and political power. While these civilisations were developing, they were puting the basis for future societies. The United States, for illustration, modeled itself after Athens, an ancient metropolis in Greece. Their development was merely every bit of import as was that of modern states because they initiated new techniques and schemes. The ancient civilisations formed a portion of our modern universe that is really apparent today. These civilisations shaped our divinity, art, music, literature, linguistic communication, life styles, and authorities. In shutting, I would wish to reflect on certain cardinal points in this essay. First off being how world learned to work together. Work force worked together in order to carry through a common end from the earliest times. But these confederations brought about warfare. War is for good imbedded in our psyches and our heads. It has ever played a major function of universe history. Despite this characteristic, the privation of adult male to accomplish a common good has continually popped up through history and resolved many of these struggles. It is necessary that we understand how modern civilisation developed so that we can to the full grok it. Mankind has shown a continual attempt to accomplish flawlessness, with some methods coming to a dead terminal and others booming, and whether or non we of all time achieve a perfect society depends on whether or non we are able to to the full swear each other. 346

How Fossil Fuels Affect The Environment Research Paper Example

How Fossil Fuels Affect The Environment Research Paper Example How Fossil Fuels Affect The Environment Paper How Fossil Fuels Affect The Environment Paper Essay Topic: Renewable energy Describe and explain how the use of Fossil fuels may affect the environment and discuss measures, which could be taken to reduce the harmful consequences Fossil fuels include gasoline, oil, coal, or natural gas. Whenever we burn them, more pollutant gases are emitted into the atmosphere. They are burned to run cars and trucks, heat homes and business and power factories and are responsible for about 98% of U. S carbon dioxide emissions, 24% of methane emissions and 18% of nitrous oxide emissions. Because of the harmful effects of these pollutant gases, produced when fossil fuels are burnt, they pose a major threat to the environment. Almost all air pollutants are the result Of fossil fuel combustion, either in the home, by industries or the internal combustion engine. Smoke is tiny particles of carbon suspended in the air, produced as a result of burning coal and oil. While smoke remains in the air, it can reduce the light intensity at ground level; hence reduce the overall rate of photosynthesis. Deposits of smoke, or more particularly, soot and ash, may coat plant leaves directly reducing photosynthesis by preventing light penetration or even by clogging stomata openings. The pollutants involved in acid rain are sulfur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen, zone and various volatile organic vapors given off from gasoline stations. Fossil fuels contain between 1% and 4% sulfur and consequently around 30 million tones of sulfur dioxide is emitted from the chimneys of Europe each year. Its effect in high concentrations, are harmful to plants in that it reduces growth, especially in barley, wheat and lettuce and others such as lichens may be killed. Sulfur dioxide (ASS) dissolves in water forming sulfurous acid (HASPS). This is then converted to sulfur trioxide (ASS) then to sulfuric acid (HASPS). Acid rain is harmful since it causes acidification of the soil. Changes in soil pH change the solubility of the ions present, in acid soil; essential minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium and trace elements start to be lost by leaching. In very acid soil (pH below 4. 5) aluminum ions may appear in the soil at very poisonous concentrations. Aluminum ions may also be leached into lakes and rivers and kill fish and other marine life. Since the industrial revolution, CO gases emitted into the atmosphere have increased by 27%. The pre- industrial concentration was in 1 860 was pump where as the present concentration is estimated at 368 pump. Methane, another greenhouse gas has more than doubled. The main cause Of the increased CO level is due to the combustion of coal and oil. For every tone of carbon burnt, 4 tones of CO are liberated Scientist argue that this extra CO in the air, trap heat and produce a greenhouse effect, causing expansion of the ocean, melting of the polar icecaps with a consequent rise in sea levels. This would in turn cause flooding of low- lying land. The greenhouse effect is not entirely bad, since it maintains the average of the earths surface at 1 5?SQ rather than 18?CO, in the absence of greenhouse gases. CO is transparent o short wave radiation from the sun, but strongly absorbs the long wave radiation that the earth irradiates into space. Global warming is responsible for an increase in 0. 5 1. 0 ?CO of average world temperature, since the late 19th century. If emissions of CO gases are not reduced significantly, the average global temperature is expected to rise by 1. 58 ?CO in the next century. Not only will this increase directly damage plant life, but evaporation will increase as the climate warms, which will increase average global precipitation. Soil moisture is likely to decline in many regions and intense mainstream are likely to be more frequent. These are all serious repercussions of global warming. The relatively inert oxide Of nitrogen, denigrating oxide, is formed during fossil fuel combustion. In the stratos phere, in the presence of u. V. Radiation, denigrating oxide is no longer inert. It reacts with atomic oxygen to form two molecules of nitrogen monoxide radicals (NO?s). These then react with ozone molecules, converting them to molecular oxygen and reforming nitrogen monoxide radicals. Radicals speed up the destruction of ozone because they constantly re-emerge to trigger another reaction. The destruction of the ozone layer results in a significant increase in u. V. Radiation reaching the earths surface. Ultra violet radiation is absorbed by the Purina and pyridine bases in DNA and modifies tem, with consequences affecting the expression of genetic information. In humans this results in a higher incidence of skin cancer. In higher plants grown as crops the effect of increased exposure to u. V radiation is to reduce yields. Aquatic organisms including fish larvae and plankton are very sensitive to u. V light. Disruption in the ecological balance in the ocean may not only affect marine food chains, UT the contribution of the ocean to the absorption of carbon dioxide. In order to reduce the effects of fossil fuel combustion, the primary measure that should be employed is to find alternative energy sources. Renewable energy comes from the exploitation of wave power, wind power, tidal power, solar energy, hydroelectric power and biological sources including biomass (wood charcoal, crop residues, dung and other organic materials). Many of these forms of renewable energy have a low environmental impact hence may be relatively environmentally friendly. Biological fuels, for instance can e used to supply humans growing energy needs. The Gasohol programmer in Brazil, where sugar cane wastes are used to produce a motor vehicle fuel, is such an example. This will reduce the effects of fossil fuel combustion emissions. International efforts can be established to control carbon dioxide emissions as well as implement usage of alternative sources of energy, instead of depleting the worlds fossil fuel reserves, which is expected only to last another 500 years. Governments can also educate the public on the dangers of energy inefficiency. They might choose to promote more efficient use of energy in moms and businesses, including electrical energy since burning fossil fuels generates most of the electricity. They can set energy efficient standards for domestic appliances. They could also change building regulations to ensure that new houses, offices and public buildings are more energy efficient, for instance in cold climates, measures can be taken to reduce heat loss to surroundings like double glazing windows. They may also increase duties on petrol and diesel fuel, to try to reduce their consumption. Schemes may be considered to convert the industries CO emissions into liquids or solids. One present concept for capturing CO from Waste gases involves MEA (Indetermination). Other techniques include physical absorption, chemical reactions to methanol, polymers and co-polymers aromatic carboxylic acids or urea. Individuals can also conserve energy within the home. Re- using materials, like plastic bags are one such way. Recycling newspapers, glass bottles and plastic bottles can also be done in the homes and business. Other simple measures can be employed within the home like buying energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs for the most used lights in the home. Whenever Seibel individuals should bike, walk, carpool, or use public transport to get to their destination. They can also buy minimally packaged goods, choose re- useable products instead of disposable ones. If they live in hot climates, the house should be painted a light color. Fossil fuels provide 90% of the energy we use now, but at a price of urban air pollution, acid rain, potential global warming and ozone layer depletion. As we burn fossil fuels and continue to use gasoline dependent transport, we increase the level of CO in the earths atmosphere and continue to harm the environment.

The impact of performance management system in public sector Essay

The impact of performance management system in public sector - Essay Example Performance measurement (PM) hence is part of the new public management (NPM) model which can help the organization to reform by setting goals for improvements in efficiency and effectiveness (Kaplan, 2001). In this paper, the performance measurement system is reviewed in order to better understand the development of performance measurement system in public sector and to investigate the factors affect the improvement of organization performance that lead to a development of PM framework for public sector. To achieve this aim and objectives, a literature review of the performance measurement in private sector and the review on the performance measurement system (PMS) adoption in public organisations are conducted. Then, the review on related theories will be provided to explain the performance measurement system (PMS) problems that have occurred in the public sector. 2 LITERATURE REVIEW In implementing PMS, an organisation needs to be clear about the requirements of stakeholders, how it can improve organisation performance, and how to evaluate the effectiveness of PMSs. The main areas of research that may have a significant impact on the outcome of this study can be summarized by the following: (1) definition of PMSs; (2) the Development of PMSs; and (3) PMSs in Public Sector. However, in this paper, due to word constraint and limitation of time, the literature review will cover only a few selected areas of PMS and their impacts on public sector. However, in this paper, due to word constraint and limitation of time, the literature review will cover only a few selected areas of PMS and their impacts on public sector. 1 Performance Measurement System In order to gain in-depth understanding of performance measurement system (PMS) in public sector, an academic review of the definition of PMS and its related concepts will be critically discussed. Internationally, the general consensus of researchers in this field would define performance management as a process of ev aluating efficiency and effectiveness of organization by comparing actual results with organizational setting goals. (Brignall et al., 1991; Simons, 2000; Neely et al., 2005). According to Ferreira and Otley, (2009), PMS definition includes the uses of both formal and informal process to manage and control organisational performance. The main objective of PMS is to create continuous improvement in the organisation (Brignall, 2007; Grunberg, 2004), to encourage performance management, to identify the effectiveness of existing strategies and to act as a basis for reward process (CIMA, 1993; Neely et al., 1994). Moreover, PMS is used to evaluate satisfactions of stakeholders’ expectations (Ferreira and Otley, 2009). For PMS to succeed, the following conditions should be satisfied: the coherent between PMS and business strategy; a feedback and review of PMS; and the PMS must be comprehensive and get supported and enforced by the whole organisation (Brignall et al., 1999). 2 The D evelopment of Performance Measurement Systems An understanding of the background and development of PMS is essential to study and analyze the measurement system in the public sector. To begin with, PMS was first established in private sector business enterprises and mostly based on financial indicators to evaluate company performance. Then, according to Brignall (2007), the development of performance measures was adapted from single dimension, financial, to multi-dimension PMS, which will be discussed in the following section. 1 Performance measurements The financial dimension was considered as the most important aspect of PMS for decades as to

Local government is better set up to take care of disaster relief than Essay

Local government is better set up to take care of disaster relief than central governement - Essay Example It is evidently clear from the discussion that local governments should be better equipped to set up for disaster relief than centralized government. One of the best reasons for this is that local situations are going to be specific to a region, the problems, potentials, and weather and earth related issues specific with how they should be addressed. A good example of this can be seen in the problems that occurred in the United States after Hurricane Katrina struck and New Orleans and the surrounding regions were left at the mercy of an unprepared government. The problems during that disaster were specific and were not relatable to any other region in the United States. The tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2004 is another example of how local government was better set up to respond than the centralized government. Because local governments are in a position to be better set up than centralized government it does not mean that they are prepared for what can happen. The suggestion in this paper is that local governments are in a better position to prepare for regional disasters and should become prepared in relationship with the foreseeable problems that might affect their local areas. Even though the exact timing of a disaster is not usually predictable, most disasters can be predicted as a probability. This was the case in New Orleans as well as in Turkey where the earthquake that struck recently was predicted long before it actually took place. Still, the city and the government were unprepared for the event. The following paper will explore the theoretical concepts in regard to disaster relief in relationship to local governments while examining the some of the events of the last decade that have brought disaster relief to the forefront of concern for both central and regional governments. Disaster The UN defines a disaster as â€Å"a serious disruption of the functioning of society causing widespread human, material, or environmental losses which exceed the ability of the affected society to cope using only its own resources† (Jha 2010: 4). The way in which disasters are measured is through losses, most often first in lives, then in property. A disaster is a tragedy of such proportion that the community is affected is usually close to non-functioning after a disaster and commerce stops in order to focus on creating a unified effort towards saving lives that are still in jeopardy and finding a way to restore the way of life that was disrupted during and after the event. What is often overlooked is that the aftermath of many disasters goes on for years. Long after the attention of the media has stopped focusing on the areas that have been affected, the rebuilding efforts that coincide with the human struggles continue to evolve, the relief an ongoing process that sometimes can take decades to be fulfilled. Disasters that are made by man such as the core melt-down at Chernobyl in the then U.S.S.R are just as devastating as natural disasters , such as Hurricane Katrina. The disaster at Chernobyl, in fact, has left the area uninhabitable for generations to come (Kapucu, Naim, and Alpaslan O?zerdem 2012).A disaster is not defined by its origin, but through its impact on an area and its population. Integrated Emergency Management (IEM) is the theoretical framework for the cooperative efforts of local and central government as they create an approach to effective disaster relief through both sets of entities. The key concepts for cross-organisational functions are flexibility, coordination and leadership (National or local disaster? 2011). Disasters on a small scale happen on a daily basis, utilizing the skills of the police departments, fire and rescue departments, and various other services that are

Major Trends in the Car Industry Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Major Trends in the Car Industry - Research Paper Example There are many major trends that will be impacting the automobile industry in the next five years. Fuel prices are not constant and this is something that will change the whole outlook of the automobile sector. The reliance on conventional fuel will decrease over time and new methods of energy will revolutionize the car industry. China has already announced incentives to companies in return for new energy vehicles (RNCOS, 2009). This will have a huge impact on the rest of the world. A shift in the energy is almost inevitable in future because the rising prices of oil has made it necessary for the world to look for new energy sources. This trend will revolutionize the automobile sector forever. The harmful effects on environment by the use of conventional fuel are also one reason for this future trend. Global warming is a significant issue and it is identified by all countries now. Automobile companies are already being criticized for not using eco friendly methods in order to preserve the environment. This trend has started to affect the marketing of cars already with Toyota brining its Hybrid car in the market. This trend will continue to grow and in the next five years eco friendliness will be very important for the automobile industry. Cars will be made in future with special consideration for the environment. An important trend that is imminent is the establishment of new markets for automobiles. The developing countries in future will be the new markets for cars (Audet, 1998). These countries will have a whole new social structure and the companies will have to shape their strategies according to the local environment. The establishment if plants will also be done according to the geographical location. There will also be an increases emphasis on safety in the coming years. This trend will definitely hit the automobile sector.

Acute Stress Disorder Rehabilitation

Acute Stress Disorder Rehabilitation â€Å"Up to 65 per cent of Australians are likely to experience or witness an event which threatens their life or safety† (19). Quite often trauma victims can recover by their own. However, with others it may have a negative reaction to a traumatic event which can then lead to an illness called Acute Stress Disorder (ASD) (16). This disorder is associated with mental and physical conditions combined thus causing reductions in a person’s quality of life and as a consequence includes economic burdens (12). (3) Due to the result of all the accumulating evidence, Diagnostic and Statistical Manual – fifth edition (DSM-5) has marked and modified goals and criteria for ASD. Under new criteria, ASD diagnosis will no longer predict chronic Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It will help to identify more severely affected survivors of trauma prior a diagnosis of PTSD can be made. Furthermore, the acuity people will perhaps get benefit from earlier interventions and sho rt-term rehabilitation programs that are the great help in the recovery process. Early rehabilitation interventions, including self-care strategy, thought control strategy, and cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) would speed up recovery and prevent chronic longer term problems. Besides that, family members, clinicians, and social support networks play an important role in support mechanism for recovery process. Inaddition, some potential barriers are also discussed in predicting of new problems and relapse which may occur in order to manage them. Potential recovery According to (2) DSM-5 in 2013, ASD was relocated in Trauma- and Stressor-Related Disorders. ASD is a psychological and physical shock which usually appears in response to a traumatic event in a person’s life. The acutely traumatized person can be directly exposed to or be the witness of a traumatic events such as serious accident (21%), physical assault (19%), rape or witnessing a mass shooting (50%) or natural disaster (10%)(19). (9) Symptoms of ASD occur immediately right after the trauma, and it lasts for more than 2 days and less than 1 month (4). The victim usually suffers from anxiety, distress, intense fear, helplessness, avoidance behaviours or re-experience the event (16). (15) It has been recorded that 15% to 45% of children and adolescents directly experience to at least one traumatic event. There is no statistics of how many distressed people can fully recover due to these traumas; however in many studies it has been confirmed that ASD patients can have a full rec overy under appropriate treatments. This study strongly emphasis on ASD rehabilitation rather than attempting to predict subsequent PTSD. Due to ASD timeframe is short, many victims are usually been ignored. Particularly, children and adolescent are in high risk of developing PTSD which leads to long-term psychological sequel in their life and causes a burden on health care systems. Therefore, (15) highlighted that recognizing ASD symptoms is an important step in toward enhancing intervention in the right time and speed up the recovery process. Additionally, with a formal diagnosis, it will allow highly distressed people to claim compensations from the health care service and payment for recovery treatment (4). In order to get appropriate diagnosis and early intervention, physicians play a critical role for assessments and monitoring all physical and psychological symptoms. Recovery process Whenever a referral from a physician has been made, the traumatized patients will go through a rehabilitation process. This process needs self-care strategy, thought control strategy, and CBT to support patients’ recovery and to decrease the future incidence of PTSD. (7) With self-care strategies, it focuses on personal strengths and their own judgment. Whether any kind of psychotherapies are provided to traumatic people, they should rely on their own recovery ability first. Without their own effort, all the supports will become ineffective. Traumatic patients, then, will receive reassurance and support, such as simple information and advices on self-care to overcome the normal recovery process. However, if the person cannot scope with these extremely severe events, and express a prolonged distress, or interfere with daily activities, they will need to be referral to another level of psychotherapy. Currently, it has been found that thought control strategy is an acceptable strategy for managing trauma related distress in the short term rehabilitation. Use of thought control strategy will aim to reduce the emotional distress by sharing the traumatic stories in the unforgettable period of time (14). There are four components (worry, distraction, social element and re-appraisal) which are the most commonly used to focus on helping the patient to normalize reactions to trauma (22). The first being Worry/Stress, it is best trying to get the patient to not concentrate on the stressful thought itself. Encouraging the patient to try and replace worry or stress with other day to day concerns that may hold a more minor bearing. The second is distraction. Finding a healthy distraction could be simple as think about things that provide a positive feeling or immerse the patient in an activity that is pleasurable. This will stop the patient concentrating on the traumatic event and allow them to go about a daily routine. The third would be social elements that could help. This could be asking or speaking with friends about their thoughts and how they have dealt with such events in their lives. Asking about what worked for them or what may have helped them avoid concentrating on the stressful event. This would be discussed fully so that the patient could reflect and understand how this could apply to their situation. The fourth is re-appraisal, trying and interpreting their feelings and understanding why these things are affecting them emotionally and rationalize their reactions to these feelings. From here they should challenge the validity of their emotions and feelings in order to control positive or negative feelings. If these self-care strategy and thought control strategy still have not worked well for recovery, CBT would be the next step of treatment in rehabilitation. (12) CBT will be given in five therapy sessions this comprising prolonged exposure (PE) and cognitive restructuring (CR). (12) found that these sessions provide brief forms of treatment in reducing acute symptoms of ASD in the initial month after trauma exposure. (8) PE focuses in emotional processing of thoughts. It helps interrupt and reserve recovery process by blocking cognitive and behavioral avoidance. This is accomplished through in vivo and imaginal expose. Vivo exposure involves repeatedly activities and situations that are avoided because of trauma. Overtime, the patient can reduce distressing emotion and fear. Then, they can cope effectively through these distresses. Imaginal exposure is related to repeatedly describe the event aloud in details, then recording. After that, they listen to their record in order to help t hem to realize their coping skill. Following initial assessment, patients were informed that they would be reassessed after 6 weeks Support mechanism Besides psychotherapy in rehabilitation process and early supportive care structure being delivered is an important step which supports the recovery process. Its result last long in reductions of ASD symptoms. Supportive care deliverers are family members, physician or social support network will help the traumatic patient go though the acute phase. (17on) In most cases, family members usually ask for advices on how to help their love in stressful situation. This will let the family to be able to utilize a communal experience in order to enhance the therapeutic growths. The use of positive family members has also been shown effectively assisted their traumatic member to manage their stressful conditions. They provide support, love and reinforce coping strategy with the trauma. The individual does not feel isolated, but also they feel warm and being caring. The individual, therefore, can describe what happened and how they response though this hard time. However in some cases family sometimes is not enough to support traumatic patients. If the trauma patients and their family feel unable to cope with this traumatic event, they can seek professional help from a physician such as an Australian Psychological Society (APS) psychologist. An APS psychologist will help the severe distress people to understand and manage the symptoms associated with the trauma. An APS psychologist would develop effective coping strategies for affected individual as well as their family to support the recovery process (18). If not, traumatic people also seek help from social support network such as Beyondblue, Sane or Mental Health organizations. Beyondblue is a support service designed to support, give advice and create actions. Whatever the situation is, Beyondblue always listens to their distress stories and share their misfortune. Beyondblue members can really help patients come to terms with their illness and help them to move forward (23). Similarly, Th e Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health is a not-for-profit organization which its aim to reduce the impact of trauma causing to the victims. They connect the capability of individual’s family with their organizations within the community. Therefore, they can understand about the traumatic victims, then, help them to prevent and recover from the adverse mental health effects of trauma. Barrier : wrong diagnosis, overwhelm with treatment, comorbid psychiatric disorders Due to a shorten timeframe of ASD, there appear some barriers which prevent the recovery process such as late diagnosis, overwhelmed treatments. Besides that some will subsequently develop comorbid psychiatric disorders. In case of traumatic events happen, the victims are late identified. Then, they will receive some simple advices how to overcome that situations. They are supposed to recover on their own. However, there are still significant people who cannot go through this recovery process by themselves. They need help from physicians to be assessed in order to receive a formal diagnosis. This process somehow is taken time which lead to a late diagnosis. If this is too late for appropriate treatment of stress disorder, it will develop further into PTSD. Furthermore, without this proper diagnosis, traumatic patients will not get the benefit from standard rehabilitation treatments (4). This problem can be predicted by the role of physicians who can manage clinical judgments in order to give their patient an early diagnosis. For those patients who have received treatments within hours or days after an acute trauma incident, they sometime do not response well to treatment plan due to overwhelm of different interventions. They will present a psychosocial and environment difficulties related to problems such as agitation, emotional pain, and dissociation. Quickly treatment but also slowly explanation and monitoring the response from patients will enhance effective support to recovery process. With patients that respond positively and appear to be recovered from ASD, they sometimes sudden relapse when new event happen to their life. They suffer from fear about safety for themselves as well as their family. The relapse can be recognized by close family members who help the patients to report it to physician in order to get continual treatment (17). Treatment of ASD is usually focused on its specific symptoms. However, some subsequently develop with ASD might be appear such as depression, withdrawal, shame or drug and alcohol abuse, and even suicidal behavior (17). The comorbid psychiatric disorders occur due to the inability scoping with that such traumatic events. These occurssing will significantly affect the recovery process; therefore, it is a requirement for careful attention in both pharmacologically and psychotherapeutically. The patient at high risk of suicide or drug and alcohol abuse should be highlighted during initial assessment. It is necessary to evaluate this potential harm which gets into the treatment pathway and the recovery process. Conclusions In conclusion, (4) the criteria set for ASD in DSM-V will allow identifying the people who had negative reaction to a traumatic event. Because of the short duration, it is necessary to assess severe traumatic people as quickly as possible. Then, they can receive an appropriate diagnosis in order to get benefit from rehabilitation treatments. Having an early treatment will move towards healing and recovery process. Moreover, as a result of suffering both physical and psychological conditions, these fragile people require a high level of support from family member, physicians as well as social support network to be back to normal life.

Ophelia in William Shakespeares Hamlet Essay -- William shakespeare h

Ophelia in William Shakespeare's Hamlet â€Å"Follow her close, give her good watch, I pray you† (IV.5.73). Ostensibly, Shakespeare’s Hamlet is the riddling, enigmatic, inscrutable theatrical character par excellence. His motives, madness, conflicting morals and existential struggles are ambiguous to say the least. When analysing his character, Laertes and Fortinbras are often brought in as examples of less extreme characters dealing with similar but more tangible dilemmas. The idea that there may be someone who exceeds Hamlet in instability and incomprehensibility is unfathomable. But if one looks at the character of Ophelia, this notion not only becomes a viable possibility: it becomes unignorable. For while Hamlet is constantly struggling to define himself, leaving a trail of cast-off identities, disgustedly flinging one black outfit after another out of his wardrobe as he tries to remain true to himself, his father’s memory, and his stirring unconscious, we only see Ophelia in borrowed robes. She is dressed up like a dummy, paraded around, and dismissed. With her f inal exit, we are left with a handful of ill-fitting stage costumes, none of them designed by her. It is significant that in the whole play, she is referred to by name nineteen times in total-- the majority of the time, she is Polonius’ daughter, Laertes’ sister, or merely â€Å"she† or â€Å"her.† Ophelia’s first two lines are questions, but not of the â€Å"To be or not to be† variety. â€Å"Do you doubt that?† and â€Å"No more but so?† (I.3.4-9) imply a state confusion, insecurity, and disorientation-- of â€Å"blinkered† experience, of externally-imposed tunnel vision that leads to a staggering, stilted walk through life. From her first entrance, we are presented with ... ... ultimate act of self-assertion. For not only is she shaming the court and her family, talking in riddles to the brother who preached to her, and acting out to an extreme the lesson constantly reiterated by her father, the inability to live without his guidance. She is not merely distorting the pastoral â€Å"green girl† image, making a gruesome picture of the carefree, virginal â€Å"Rose of May.† She is spitting in the face of the God who placed her in such an impotent position in the first place. And this is the real tragedy of Ophelia’s life and death. Because while Hamlet dies with the knowledge that he has fulfilled his mission, Ophelia has no mission. Her first independent act, what ought to denote the beginning of a life composed of her own initiatives, is the truncating of that life. Her beginning is her end-- the house pet, released into the wild, withers and dies.

Describe in detail what is geography and what geographers study. Dylon Breyman The Study of Geography When many people think of geography they think only of physical places in relation to each other or perhaps the topographical features of a certain place, but geography is more than Just the study of the physical world. Geographers are concerned with the physical layout of places, but also with the interactions between eople and their environment, and even cultural interactions that involve people in different places.Geography is broken down into two main fields: physical geography and human geography, each field has further subdivisions as well. Physical geography focuses on the natural environment and how a region's climate, topography, organisms, and natural processes interact. While human geographers study t he processes and patterns that effect human society. Although the fields seem very different there are quite a few areas of overlap. Geographers often make connections between human culture and society and the effects that societal hanges may have on the natural environment. For this reason geography has been important for many reasons. It not only gives us more information about the world around us, but can also be used to make predictions by observing current and past phenomenon and interactions. In this way issues such as spread of disease or food supply for a population can be addressed before they become a real problem.

Two Months in Big Bears Camp essays

Two Months in Big Bears Camp essays In "Two Months in Big Bears Camp, 1885," Sarah Carter argues that in their book "Two Months in the Camp of Big Bear: The Life and Adventures of Theresa Gowanlock and Theresa Delaney," the authors falsify their accounts of the happenings documented within. Both Theresa's tell significantly different stories immediatly after their release from the cree camp than what is published. The resulting work, is a reflection of the stereotypes of the times, as well as propaganda in support of the government. Furthermore, the attitude that resulted from the book proved to further deteriorate the already poor view of the indian bands within Canada. To support her argument, Carter uses the newspaper, The Daily Patriot, to show the type of rumors already in place when the women were released from their "captors". For example quotes such as this one from The Daily Patriot demonstrate the common pursuasive attitude. "[thier story was] the most touching of all... their death now at the hands of the indians is unspeakably sad...". Carter shows the Toronto Daily News as one of the only papers to realize the actual goings on. It was printed that "outrages of this sort has never been, and is not now, an indian habit." She quotes other papers of the times spouting off opposing un-truths, and persuasive propaganda to furthur rally the people against the "inhuman custodians." She again uses a myriad of papers who all point out that both women reported in their initial statements that "they had been treated well, had had plenty to eat, and had been subjected to no cruelties". Their statements continue in a consistent manner through out their statements, emphasizing the fact they were more boarded then captured. Citing two books, "White Captives: Gender and Ethnicity on the American Frontier" by June Namias, and "North Country Captives: Selected Naratives of Indian Captivity from Vermont and New Hampshire" by Colin Calloway to depict the "typ ...

Economic Portfolio - Economic Growth Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Economic Portfolio - Economic Growth - Coursework Example Usually, the monetary policy is executed by the central bank, through its capacity as the financial sector regulator or through its participation in the government deficit financing and open market operation. Both the Fiscal and monetary policies are very essential not only due to their macroeconomic implications but also they are important in determining the policy remit of the state, direction and level of economic transfers which intern influence the overall distribution of wealth and income as well as the level of economic activities and the structure of employment. According to Keynesian macroeconomics, The monetary and physical policies can be relied upon in controlling aggregate demand (AD) and even the change in general price level of commodities i.e. inflation rate, with the view of stabilizing price and achieving full employment. Generally in a closed economy, aggregate demand (AD) include three major elements which are; investment (I) consumption (C) and government spendin g (G). Where as, for an open economy, AD includes exports (X) and imports (Z) which gives nets export (NX) as the sum of the two. Most probably, C is always a positive function of the disposable (post-tax) income, which is negatively correlated i.e. negative output gap (NOG) with interest rate level. On the other hand the reverse will give a positive output gap (POG). For instance, when consumer’s mortgage and credit becomes so expensive, the disposable income will definitely fall and this will make consumption to decline proportionate to it. In most cases, the AD curve will exhibit a negative slope in the price-output or price-income (P-Y) space; this is due to the fact that, when prices increase, the real money supply (M/P) will decline. Thus, in order to restore the normal equilibriums between money demand and supply, the rate of interest has to rise. Immediately this happens, funds will become very expensive and both I and C decline as shown in diagram 1. Figure 3: Aggreg ate demand According to this model, it assumes that the economy is operating at a high level of employment or very depressed. Considering the above, the aggregate supply (AS) curve is so parallel to the P-Y space and firms will be willing to supply any amount at the prevailing prices. This shows that the output gap (income) is determined using the AD curve as shown at point E in figure 2. Figure 2: Aggregate supply and demand. If the economy starts operating at a level bellow capacity, the government must relax it’s monetary or fiscal policy stance i.e. increase the rate of taxation, lower the interest rate or increase expenditures so as to raise I, G or C. This will definitely cause a shift of the AD curve to the right, increasing output level, demand and employment (L) in the economy as shown in figure 3. Conservatively, if inflation is threatening to take off and unemployment is abnormally low, the government must consider tightening its monetary and fiscal policies. The r esulting spending will cut down the higher interest rate or tax rate thus; limiting the existing inflationary pressures as illustrated bellow. Figure 3: Fine-tuning aggregate demand. Incase the government decides to manipulate its monetary and fiscal policy stance completely, and then it must be able to eliminate the economic cycle as well as

Design in Contemporary Contexts Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Design in Contemporary Contexts - Essay Example So the 1850’s and onwards the term Realism was used by artists and designers. Romanticism was subjective and Realism was objective. The current historicism has been opposed by modernism with a series of ideas that included Romanticism itself. But a painting school originating in France called Impressionism had a particular impact on modernism. Initially it was work done in air not in the studios as they believed that human beings did not see objects but what they see is the light. With time, the studies of the school became a great influence. When the century was turning, there were three concepts that were in conflict. Firstly, machines as being a part of beauty were considered important. Secondly, the subjective experience was important. Lastly, there was a necessity that a system replaces the concept of objective reality. The first fifteen years of twentieth century of modernism were marked by famous artists such as Matisse, the abstract paintings of Wassily Kandinsky and m any others. To this point, modernism enjoyed subjective experience and the idea of a simplified structure. Cinemas were introduced during this period and the idea of moving pictures gave modernism a unique art form. The art of photography also affected modernism. Modernism began to merge with consumer culture during the 1960’s after World War II. Along with modernist art, modernist design entered the popular cultures. This amalgamation transformed the meaning of modernism itself. This kind of modernism suggested the rejection of tradition which itself became a tradition. It also suggested that there was a difference between the elite modernist and mass consumerist culture and this difference had lost its precision. This marked the start of the Post Modernism era. (Museum Quality, 2007). Two Modernist Artists/Designers Marcel Duchamp was one of the modernist artist who had become famous from the year 1916 when he had installed ready-made objects such as hat stands, bottle stan ds in the art gallery. In 1917, the Fountain which was a ready made object had entered the art history as an iconic object. (Meecham and Sheldon, 2005, p.17).One of his famous quotes are: â€Å"The creative act is not performed by the artist alone; the spectator brings the work in contact with the external world by deciphering and interpreting its inner qualifications and thus adds his contribution to the creative act.† The above quote stated by Duchamp suggests that modernism can be understood in terms of objectivism through observation of the real world entities and incorporating those observations in art. This shows that he followed the Dadaist and Surrealist Movements. Edward Johnston was another famous modernist artist who became famous in the 1919 when he came up with his iconic object called the London Underground which was a modified form of an existing logo and became greatly popular and liked. He was among the early artists who brought corporate taste in artistic pi ece. (MobileReference). One of the famous quotes by Johnston is: â€Å"A man who don’t know history, he don’t know anything.† Hence, this shows that Johnston believed historicism in art. Marcel Duchamp Marcel Duchamp was a French artist who supported the Dadaist and Surrealist movements. His artwork influenced the Western art’s development after the World War I. He influenced many other famous artists with his
